Anyone who clings to the historically untrue -- and -- thoroughly immoral doctrine that violence never solves anything I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler would referee. Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other" |

It could have prevented things such as the Holocaust and countless other genocides. Would have prevented both world wars, and would probably come in handy right now in the Middle East seeing as how we have no right to be there.
But we'll never know since most people don't pay any attention to folks like John Lennon when they say "give peace a chance."
Just my thoughts. It is a very powerful quote though.

I agree that violence is everywhere; we can thank the media for that. Video games, movies, television, and even news broadcasts of war across the world make the very clear. The problem with that is it's self perpetuated: we believe violence is the only way because we are constantly told it is. We believe violence solves everything because we're never shown any other way.
Take the Garden of Eden for example. Set aside any personal feelings and/or beliefs about religion and look at this as just a story. Adam and Eve existed peacefully on this Earth without violence. It was only after they were banished from the garden that things went south.
Flash forward to Pandora and her little stunt that she pulled involving some sort of "magic" box and you see all of the cruel things in the world: pain, suffering, and violence.
As it stands now, I don't think we'll ever do away with violence completely. We can agree on that much. But that does weigh heavy on my hearts and the hearts of many people just like me who want nothing more than to live in peace and harmony with everyone on this Earth. If instead of running blindly into the battlefield people would take a step back and weigh the options and find what is morally sound, peace would be more prevalent in our society.
And I will agree that John Lennon was high as a kite when we wrote most of his music. But that still doesn't mean we shouldn't listen...

Ok, so my biggest thing that I want to bring up right now is not to make the "media" the cause of all of these problems. Media is show before man, and man makes the choice weather or not to accept, agree, question or disagree. Thats nature. I personally think that there is no way that peace could ever work, simply because people are different, no single person can have their ideal world. People, as human beings do not always agree. And once people realize that they can end that disagreement through violence, then violence will happen. Lets say that we did all live in a world of peace, nothing bad happening, ect ect. Lets say, I decide that just for the hell of it, I want a new dog. So I go to the store and buy a dog, now lets just say that my dog happens to bite someone. Well obviously that person is pretty upset right now, and files a lawsuit. Ok, so I dont make very much money lets say, and I realize, fuck, I cant pay for his medical bills. Its either I do something, or I live the rest of my life in jail because of this stupid incident. Then I realize, wait, If I kill him and cover it up, I dont have to pay and I get to live my life. Boom, violence happens.
That was a really stupid example, and yes it has alot of holes and stuff, but I hope that you are able to see my point in that little story. I do believe that peace could work, but I think that it is impossible for human beings to maintain it.

I totally wish that was how life worked. "Oh fuck, the rent's due. But if I kill my landlord and cover it up, I won't have to pay! I do see your point though. And I'm glad we can agree that peace could work, but that it's mankind preventing it from happening.
True, the media isn't necessarily the cause, but it perpetuates things. Violence itself is the cause of violence, but when we are bombarded with images of violence every day it sends a pretty clear message that since violence is everywhere, it might be acceptable (or "100 people dead in a bombing? What's one more?") That sounds pretty archaic, but it's a simplified version of the truth.
I do believe personally that everybody can live in harmony with one another. Sure, there are personal, moral, and religious beliefs separating us, but if you think about it we're all fundamentally the same at heart. Letting man-made things come between us is ridiculous. Religion and politics were created by man as a means to organize and bring people together. It's a shame that what was once used as a way to unite people is now seen as a force that leaves us standing divided from one another.
Thank you for the compliment. I'm always up for a little discussion. As long as both parties understand that it's a civilized discussion and not a heated argument, things go rather smoothly.

All it take is one person to mess it all up.
If I wanted to be an asshole and ruin world peace, I could do it. It only takes one.
